The question here is not what type of challenge or difficulties were faced, but HOW THEY WERE HANDLED…??

There are no such rules that can define the course of actions to be followed during every crisis but there are a set of guidelines that can be followed in order to emerge out of a challenging situation as a winner. Some of the tips given below might turn out to be useful in those tough times:

  1. TAKE A DEEP BREATH: Every time you get a piece of bad news you need to sit down, take a deep breath and think over it. This is far better than reacting impulsively and regretting over a knee jerk reaction later on. Deep breaths have known to calm your nerves by simply increasing the amount of oxygen flow to your brain and helping you think better. By doing this in every stressful situation, you will realize that most of the seemingly difficult mountains are essentially mole hills.
  1. THE LITTLE EYES THAT SEE: Whenever you begin to react to a situation you must tell yourself that by virtue of being a leader you have the inherent responsibility to teach those placed under you. Their eyes are constantly watching you and the way you behave and react. They will learn and adapt whatever they see coming from you. Being calm and giving out a sense of control and composure is always best when dealing around juniors.
  1. LIMITED EXPOSURE: A certain amount of exposure is good. You need to sometimes take a back seat and share things with your team as well. If you don’t do this then you are more likely prone to diseases related to stress and hypertension. Use your team members as a vent. However, you need to be careful and maintain a line that demarcates the difference between being friendly and being over friendly with your juniors.
  1. MASK IT UP: It is considered most appropriate for a leader not to involve his team in stressful situations that are not theirs to bear. You need to occasionally put on a mask and behave as if all were normal. This would absolve the team of unnecessary tensions and keep their work output to the desired levels.
  1. KEEP A JOURNAL: Everyone needs some sort of a vent in life. There will be numerous stressful days in your career and it would not be advisable to keep your friends and family at the receiving end to spill out the beans. Keeping a journal will help with such situations. You may be editing the journal daily, weekly or even monthly but it will make sure that you don’t walk around with bags full of stress in your head. A clear head will directly translate into better work environments and greater productivity.

Situational leadership is nothing but a style of leadership which says that no existing leadership style is best or guarantee to 100% success. It is in fact the ability of the leader to adapt itself to various situations that make him successful in coping up challenging situations.
